Portland After-School Tennis was founded in 1996 by Nancy Osborne, then Schools Director for the USTA/PNW, and Dr. Ernest Hartzog, then Assistant Superintendent of Portland Public Schools, to provide an after-school tennis and education program to underserved children. Over the years, our organization evolved to include summer tennis and reading program. In 2008, Danice Brown, Executive Director wrote and launched a new program curriculum which emphasized a stronger educational component to our existing After-School Program. Program hours were increased from 1-2 hours where 60% of the time is dedicated to reading, writing, life skills, nutrition, and 40% of the time in tennis and fitness activities. As a result of this dynamic change in programming, the Board of Directors voted to officially change the organizations name to Portland After-School Tennis & Education. A new program curriculum designed by Danice Brown, Executive Director broaden the depth and scope of our reading, writing, nutrition and life-skills curriculum to 60% of program time while still dedicating 40% to tennis and fitness activities.
